Probability, percentage, proportion and fractions The idea of randomness, like most things, can become very complicated, but please do not waste your purity of essence on undue worry at this point. Behind the rationale for applying the normal distribution is the assumption that the population being sampled is random. The table shows the percentages between a score and the mean (average). A table of normal curve equivalents is shown below (there is also an unmarked version). Normal distributions are symmetrical, bell-shaped distributions that are useful in describing real-world data. Rather strangely or confusingly, they sometimes refer to that height as "a statistic".įor the purposes of following the discussions in Intelligence and madness, the calculations using the standard distribution table, such as those in this section, are not required. There is one exception to this, when a person refers to a particular measurement such as a person's height. Anyone who talks about averages or statistics is not All statistics is about averaging, that is about abstracts or generalisations (see ‘intelligence’: misuse and abuse of statistics and why Aristotelian logic does not work).

While calculating statistical measures is essentially simple, interpreting their meaningĪnd deciding how to apply them can become very complicated. The dimensions of the markings did not cause the girth of the trees, nor visa versa
